Aerobús, Metro, taxi or private transfer — which one works best in July and August?

If you have already read about how to get from Barcelona Airport to City then you already know what options are available. You can take the metro, Aerobús, taxi or private transfer. These options are good to use any time of the year.

Summer is a little different though.

The Aerobús in Summer

A lot of people like using the Aerobús because it is cheap. The Aerobús goes from the airport to the Plaça de Catalunya for €6.75, which is a good price. You do not need to book the Aerobús ahead of time.

In the winter the Aerobús is a fine way to get to the city. In the summer it is not as easy.

The Aerobús gets full quickly. In July and August when a lot of people are traveling it is hard to get on the Aerobús. You usually have to wait for the second or even the third one. The Aerobús stops at a few places. Gran Via, Urgell and Plaça de Catalunya. With all the traffic the trip can take around 55-60 minutes.

When you add the time you spend waiting for the Aerobús to the time you spend on the Aerobús you will need at least an hour to get to the city center, from Barcelona Airport using the Aerobús.

The Metro in Summer

The Metro L9 Sud connects both airport terminals to the city. Costs around €5.15. This is a cheap option and it runs frequently. However in the summer the Metro L9 Sud becomes one of the most uncomfortable ways to arrive in Barcelona.

The Metro platforms get really crowded. The Metro carriages fill up fast. The Metro L9 Sud requires at least one transfer to reach most hotel areas. This means you have to navigate the Metro system with your suitcases, find the Metro platform and wait again for the Metro.

On an October morning when you have a small carry-on it is easy to use the Metro. But in August when you have two suitcases, you are with a family of four and it is 35°C outside, using the Metro L9 Sud is a lot to handle.

It is worth knowing that some older Metro trains in Barcelona do not have air conditioning. In the summer this makes a difference when you are using the Metro.

Taxis in Summer

Official Barcelona taxis are white with black markings. They have meters. You can always find them outside arrivals. You do not need to book them in advance.

A taxi ride to the city center from El Prat costs between thirty-five and forty-five euros, plus a four-fifty airport fee. The rate is a bit higher at night or on weekends.

The problem in summer is not the price. It's the waiting time.

When many flights land at the same time the taxi line outside arrivals can get long quickly. In July and August waiting thirty to forty minutes is common. There's no way to avoid it. You just join the line and wait.

If you're traveling alone and don't have much luggage that's okay. If you're with kids, elderly relatives or feeling tired from a long flight, standing in the sun for forty minutes is not a great way to start your trip.

Private Transfer in Summer. Why It Makes Sense

A private transfer works differently.

Your driver knows your flight number and tracks it in real time. So if you land early or your flight is delayed by two hours, we adjust automatically. You don't need to call anyone or send messages.

When you arrive your driver is already there holding a sign with your name. You don't have to wait in line or search for a taxi. You walk out of baggage claim. Your ride is right there.

The car is cool, clean and has space for your luggage. The price was fixed when you booked. No extra charges for traffic or airport fees.

In summer having a reliable service is worth a lot. Flights are fuller, airports are busier. Every minute you save at the airport is a minute you get to enjoy Barcelona.

Which Option Should You Choose?

There is no one answer to this question because it really depends on your situation. Here is a simple way to think about it:

Aerobús

You should choose the Aerobús if you are traveling by yourself, you do not have a lot of luggage and your main concern is saving money. Just remember that you will have to wait and you should allow some time.

Metro

You should choose the Metro if you are comfortable using public transportation, you know how the system works and you do not have big bags. It is the cheapest option and it works well if you are near a metro line.

Taxi

You should choose a taxi if you do not want to book in advance and you are okay with waiting in line. It is a reliable way to get to your destination and it will take you directly there. You just have to factor in the time you might have to wait.

Private Transfer

You should choose a private transfer if you are traveling with your family, you have a lot of suitcases, you have a connection to make or you just want to arrive feeling relaxed. In the summer it is the option that will give you the least amount of stress.

A Few Practical Things to Know

Before you land at El Prat airport in the summer there are a few things you should keep in mind:

  • The terminal you arrive at is important. Terminal 1 handles international flights. Terminal 2 handles some low-cost airlines. You should make sure you know which terminal you are arriving at. The Aerobús and Metro both go to both terminals. Private transfers will meet you at the right one automatically.

  • Traffic is really bad in the morning and evening. If you are landing between 8 and 10 in the morning or 5 and 8 in the evening you should allow some time no matter which option you choose.

  • There is a fee for taxis at the airport. It is 4.50 euros. It is added to the cost of the ride. This is a fee and not a scam.

  • Private transfers include the cost of tolls. With us, the tolls are included in the price. With taxis they are added on top.

  • You should book in advance if you can. In the summer it can be hard to get a transfer at the last minute and it might cost more. If you book the night before or when you buy your flight you can be sure of the price. You will have a driver.
